Why routine visits?

The American Dental Association recommends that patients visit their dentist twice a year for a routine evaluation. These regular appointments allow patients to build a trusting relationship with their dentist, while at the same time, allowing the dentist the opportunity to monitor the health of a patient’s smile. Conditions that can negatively affect the smile, such as periodontal disease and tooth decay, can be spotted early with a proper diagnosis. This allows the dental team the chance to address the problem before it becomes a bigger, more expensive issue that can greatly impact the smile.

What conditions can damage the smile?

The two conditions that are most impactful on the smile include periodontal disease and tooth decay.

Periodontal disease – periodontal disease, or “gum disease,” is a chronic infection that starts in the soft tissues and can spread throughout the mouth. Additionally, the bacteria from the mouth can carry into the bloodstream and increase a patient’s chance for strokes and heart attacks. With early diagnosis, periodontal disease can be managed, but once it reaches the later stages, it can only be controlled, not cured. The earlier the condition is found, the more likely the chance of recovery.

• Tooth decay – tooth decay, or “cavities,” are areas where acids and sugars on the teeth and gums have eaten away at the natural tooth enamel. These holes can be sensitive to sweets and temperature changes within the mouth and can often become deep and painful. Fillings are used to treat these conditions and seal off the tooth to keep it free from infection.
