What You Need to Know Before Having Your Teeth Whitened

Teeth Whitening Houston TXTeeth whitening has been a favorite treatment from the moment it became available in dental offices around the world. You may not realize it, but it took humans hundreds of years to reach the point where teeth could be whitened safely and efficiently. The continual effort that has gone into creating a viable method of teeth whitening demonstrates the desire that most people have for bright teeth. By “most people,” we mean about 80% of Americans.

If you are one of the millions who want a brighter smile, the way to get it is easier than it ever has been. To get the radiance you want, all you need to do is schedule treatment with your Houston dentist. In our office, we take one visit to examine your teeth and create a mold from which whitening trays can be made. A second visit is scheduled shortly after the first to deliver your trays and supply of whitening gel to you. When you visit us, one of the very first things we will do is confirm that you are, in fact, a good candidate for teeth whitening.

How We Know

There are general guidelines that make a person a good candidate for teeth whitening, and then there are secondary factors that may lead that person to choose another type of cosmetic dentistry. For example:

  • Stain-type matters. The common stains that result from a twenty-year smoking habit or an obsession with coffee, fortunately, do not have to cost you a great smile. These products and others stain teeth from the outside in. They reside in the uppermost layer of enamel so are easily reached by an appropriate bleaching agent.
  • Are there other concerns? Teeth whitening can elevate the brightness of your smile, but you may still be troubled by a gap or chip or turned tooth. In such an instance, a better option may be to disguise imperfections with porcelain veneers.
  • Can results be maintained? Natural enamel is porous. It will absorb debris over time. An initial teeth-whitening treatment may, therefore, need to be repeated. You aren’t required to maintain results with periodic touch-ups, but you may want to ask yourself what strategies you are willing to implement to keep your smile bright.
