Having multiple missing teeth or a number of teeth that need to be extracted due to injury or dental decay is not unusual. In fact, more than 35 million people in America are missing all of their upper and/or lower teeth. Dentures or partial dentures are an option, but for many they are uncomfortable and don’t provide a great solution. Instead, the All-on-4 restoration with Peters Dental Associates could be the perfect solution.
What is the difference between All-on-4 implants and dentures?
All-on-4 dental restorations utilize four dental implants and a permanent set of natural-looking teeth that are attached on top of them. Unlike dentures, they do not need to be taken out; only your dentist will be able to remove them. Because they do not press down on the gums (as dentures do), our patients find the restorations very comfortable. All-on-4 implants create a 70% increase in bite force, allowing the patient to eat a normal diet. Plus, since missing teeth are replaced by this appliance, it helps prevent jawbone deterioration and keeps facial features intact.
How do All-on-4 implants differ from traditional implants?
Unlike the traditional six to eight implants that are utilized by regular implants in each arch, All-on-4 uses only four implants, which are placed at a certain angle and provide natural support to the bone. Moreover, All-on-4 implants usually do not require any bone grafting. This saves time, money, effort, and a lot of discomfort.
What can I expect from my All-on-4 appointment?
Depending on the individual, an All-on-4 procedure requires two or more appointments, in addition to your initial consulation. The first visit, where the four implants are placed, takes about two-and-a-half hours per arch. Once the implants are placed in the jawbone, it takes a few weeks for the jawbone to grow around the implants and fully integrate them (a process called osseointegration). During this time, you wear a set of temporary dentures. Once the implants are secure, you return and your custom-made permanent dentures are attached to the four implants.
How can I care for my All-on-4 implants post-surgery?
Like traditional implants, All-on-4 implants are cared for like natural teeth. Brush and floss them the way you normally do. Dr. Peters will also provide you additional oral hygiene instructions.
