Protect your teeth against grinding (bruxism)

Why should I wear a night guard?

Bruxism, or the forceful grinding or clenching of teeth, can cause several dental problems over time, both aesthetic and functional. The grinding action of the upper and lower teeth can cause excessive tooth wear, flattening the teeth and making them sensitive to temperature. Teeth may become cracked, exposing the nerve; bruxism can also lead to receding gums and tooth loss. Once the damage has been done, you will need dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, implants, bridges, root canals, or tooth extractions. Bruxism can also cause migraines and pain in the neck, ears, shoulders, and back.

What are other ways to treat bruxism?

While not all patients are thrilled with the idea of wearing night guards, research has shown they are the best solution and treatment for bruxism. Behavior modification, even the use of Botox to relax jaw muscles, has not proven anywhere near as effective as mouth guards.

What is the difference between a drugstore night guard and a professional night guard?

Some people purchase night guards from their local drugstore, but we don’t recommend that. Why? They are usually too large and don’t fit your particular bite. Because of this, the guards can come out of your mouth when grinding begins.

Dr. Peters weighs your individual grinding situation, takes impressions of your teeth and bite, and has a lab create a custom-made mouth guard just for you. The fit of a custom mouth guard is precise, and while costing a little more up front will save you money in the long run.
